3M™ Release Agents and Lubricants

3M™ offers a wide range of coating systems with the 3M™ release agents and lubricants especially designed for the high-temperature field. These are suitable for a wide variety of applications and industries. 

In addition, depending on the area in which they are used, you can choose from among powder, suspension and spray. 3M™ release agents and lubricants are also persuasive through their chemical stability, high thermal resistance and electrical insulation. All release agents and lubricants containing boron nitride are also characterized by high thermal conductivity.

3M™ release agents and lubricants are boron nitride products, up to the 3M™ suspension Cast-M lining, which was developed specially for lining metals and metallic substrates.

3M™ Suspension Cast-M

3M™ Suspension Cast-M is a water-based ceramic finish with outstanding release and protective properties, for use on metallic substrates in the aluminum industry.

3M™ Suspension Cast-M is moistened neither by molten aluminum nor by its oxide films. This is how a reaction of the liquid aluminum with metallic parts, such as casting ladles, castings and thermocouples, etc. is also prevented.

  • 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension Cast-C

  • 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension Cast-C has been developed for special aluminum casting requirements. With the patented nanobinder, the boron nitride layer provides hitherto unequaled release and protective properties when used on ceramic substrates, such as casting tables and launders, hot top rings, etc.

    Depending on use, the suspension can be diluted with water. Other additives ensure that, in comparison with other conventional suspensions, a higher resistance to scratching is achieved or that the flexibility of the finish remains guaranteed up to a temperature of 800°C [1,500°F].

3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WP

It is a finishing agent based on hexagonal boron nitride in water. It is suitable for use on metallic substrates, with refractory materials or insulating materials. On these surfaces, it reliably prevents bonding of, for example, molten aluminum. 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WP is unsuitable for use on carbon faces and in reducing atmospheres. 

The inorganic binder that is contained in 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WP also guarantees excellent bonding properties, even at high temperatures (1,400°C [2850°F] in a vacuum, 900°C [1650°F] in air). The considerable protective effect of the applied layers—and correspondingly reliable release properties—is facilitated by a high degree of chemical purity in combination with the unique properties of hexagonal boron nitride. 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WP finishes also have good thermal conductivity and electrical insulation properties.

  • 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WS

  • 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WS is a water-based finishing agent sold ready for use. The suspension was specially developed for use as a protective coating in high-vacuum metallizing with aluminum and as a release agent or protective coating in galvanizing plants. 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WS combines an optimized proportion of hexagonal boron nitride with a low proportion of inorganic binders; these guarantee excellent surface bonding even at high temperatures.

    An even application of 3M™ Boron Nitride Suspension WS forms an extremely effective insulating and protective film. The feature of the suspension is in the combination of good bonding and a very good insulating effect. This prevents the layer spalling while in contact with steam, and at the same time ensures that the vaporized metal layers can be removed easily from the corresponding points, should this be required for the work process.

  • 3M™ Boron Nitride Sprays EP, TG and Extrusion

  • 3M™ Boron Nitride Sprays are based on ethyl alcohol and are therefore quick-drying coatings that are composed of hexagonal boron nitride and various organic or inorganic binder systems. In this variable composition, they are suitable for a wide range of uses in the most diverse branches of industry  from use in the aluminum extrusion, casting and glass industries through to use in welding and soldering systems, to sintering metallurgy and in furnace construction.
  • 3M™ offers Boron Nitride Sprays in three different versions
    • 3M™ Boron Nitride Spray EP is particularly suitable for use in the casting industry and in the sintering metallurgy field.
    • 3M™ Boron Nitride Spray TG is used mainly in connection with welding and soldering work
    • 3M™ Boron Nitride Spray Extrusion is designed for the special requirements of aluminum extrusion.

        Hexagonal boron nitride from 3M Technical Ceramics is economical in use and can be applied easily.
